The Last Remnant (ラストレムナント, Rasuto Remunanto) is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix. It was released worldwide for Xbox 360 in November 2008 and for Microsoft Windows in March 2009. A PlayStation 3 version was originally announced as well, but this version was cancelled.[5] A remastered version titled The Last Remnant Remastered was released on PlayStation 4 in December 2018 and for Nintendo Switch in June 2019. The game follows a teenage warrior on a quest to end the war, in a fictional world divided into multiple city-states and inhabited by four different species. Their past includes a conflict over \"Remnants\", magical artifacts of varying forms. The game features a unique battle system in which the player commands multiple groups, or \"unions\", of characters rather than individual units.
In September 2018, Square Enix announced the production of a remastered version of the game titled The Last Remnant Remastered, to be released for PlayStation 4 on December 6, 2018. The remaster features a game engine upgrade from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4,[4] with improved graphics and features.[59] The remaster was released in December 2018 for PlayStation 4, and for Nintendo Switch in June 2019.
Though the game is not that great it certainly is enjoyable from time to time. I have a feeling more obscure RPGs like this will continue to come as long as Switch is selling. Last year a remastered of a meh RPG from Tri-Ace also got released exclusively for PS4 and PC called Resonance of Fate 4K / HD Edition. Almost no one bother to review it except Destructoid and gave it the same score as this. I had a feeling that same game will land on the Switch someday too in an attempt to at least get a few bucks from Switch owners who hadn't try it.
Rush Sykes is the prototypical fantasy hero, innocently sulky but totally devoted to his sweet sister Irina. When Irina is kidnapped, Rush hurries to liberate her, but unsurprisingly, it's not the most straightforward of rescues. Rather, Rush finds himself caught in a political struggle centered around powerful magical artifacts called remnants. These objects are both the center of society as well as a great curiosity, heavily researched at the Academy by hosts of scientists, including Rush's own parents. What starts as an upheaval between the pro- and anti-remnant factions explodes into an all-out war when a formidable hulk of a man calling himself the Conqueror appears, apparently able to control any remnant, no matter how large or potent. Political forces clash and hidden powers are unleashed, and though a tenuous peace is eventually achieved, it isn't long before conflict reawakens. The story is epic, though Rush himself isn't the most interesting leading man. Fortunately, his supporting cast is excellent; the noble David is a charmingly haughty presence, and David's guard Emma makes a strong impression, thanks to some excellent, emphatic voice acting.
Whereas other RPGs tend to center on their protagonist, The Last Remnant eventually focuses on the Conqueror and his secrets. He's a solemn, momentous presence who makes an impact each time he appears, and it's easy to believe that this man may actually be capable of controlling the universe. But though it will take you a good 60 hours or more to unravel all of his secrets, the journey is entertaining, given that The Last Remnant's distinctive fantasy world is so beautifully constructed. Each city you visit is different from the last, yet the overall vision is cohesive, so nothing feels out of place. Landmarks such as the towering, glowing remnant in Elysion are not soon forgotten, and numerous side quests will have you exploring scorching deserts, caves of bubbling lava, and even the land of the dead. Most of these locales are lovely and beautifully lit.
Xbox 360 was home to some unique JRPGs, one of which was The Last Remnant with its battle system that has you command unions of troops. I remember enjoying it back in the day so I jumped at the opportunity to play this remastered version for PlayStation 4.
The Last Remnant first released on Xbox 360 back in 2008. A PC version of the game was released shortly after, before the PS3 version of the game was canceled back in 2009. The remastered version arrived first on PS4 last year, shortly following the unfortunate news that the game was being delisted from Steam.
Almost 10 years ago, Square Enix released The Last Remnant worldwide for a global audience, receiving praise for its refreshing take on JRPGs and its unique gameplay mechanics. Today, Square Enix announces that The Last Remnant is being remastered for new and old fans to enjoy!
The announcement of the remastered has only been for the PlayStation 4. I can confirm this by not only from reports on other gaming sites but also via the press materials that Square Enix sent over to us.
Grab your Switch and head over to the eShop because you've got a present waiting for you. Square Enix announced at E3 2019 that The Last Remnant has been remastered and is available tonight on Nintendo Switch.
Though Square Enix didn't really say anything other than, \"Available tonight,\" it has published a 10-minute documentary on the making of the remastered version (for anyone that's worried Square Enix may have missteped again).
In The Last Remnant, the player controls the young hero Rush Sykes on a quest to rescue his kidnapped sister. While chasing after the mysterious kidnappers, Rush gains the aid of the Four Generals of Athlum: Emma the Mitra (a human), Torgal the Sovani (a four-armed feline), Blocter the Yama (a hulking fish creature), and Pagus the Qsiti (a humanoid frog), as well as their ruler, Marquis David whose soul is bound to the remnant (magical artifact) weapon Gae Bolg. What starts as a rescue mission, later unfolds a more sinister plot of greater powers.
This is arguably a step up from all of the announcements marked from 2020, as gamers have been itching to hear about new games at E3 releasing before the end of 2019. Last Remnant Remastered is available on Switch for $19.99, though you can also purchase it on PlayStation 4 if you were unaware of its launch last year. 59ce067264
